What is Security in Wireless Networks?

Security in Wireless Networks

Before talking about the Wireless networks, we need to know what wireless networks are. Apart from this, this will lead us to know about what is security in wireless networks?.

Security in wireless networks is the prevention of unauthorized access or data using wireless networks that mainly includes Wi-Fi networks. It is the prevention of unauthorized access or damage to technological media like computers or any data using wireless networks, which include Wi-Fi networks too. The most common type for its example is Wi-Fi security.

Many laptops and computers have wireless cards that are pre-installed. This is beneficial for hackers using wireless networks relatively easy to break into, and even to hack into wired networks as well. As a result, it is very important that enterprises provide strong effective wireless security policies against unauthorized access to important resources.

The risks of users of wireless technology have increased vigorously in recent years, as the service has become more popular with users. There created few dangers when wireless technology was first introduced. Wireless networks were not common in the workplace. However, in recent years, still, after this huge revolution, there are many security risks associated with the current wireless protocols. The hacking system has become more sophisticated and innovative with wireless access.

Why is Security in Wireless Networks Important?

Security in wireless networks is important because it is the prevention of unauthorized users from accessing one’s wireless network, and prevents stealing the data using your Wi-Fi network.

Wireless networks offer great potential for exploitation for two main reasons, they are:

  1. use the airwaves for communication
  2.  wireless-enabled laptops are ubiquitous

To make the most of their security planning, enterprises need to focus on threats that pose the greatest possible risks.

Government organizations should implement a completely wireless security solution to ensure effective wireless threat protection.

What we need to Know About the Security in Wireless Networks?

Wireless network or WiFi, whenever we hear these, we intend to realize how convenient our life has become.WiFi has made life easy for anyone to use the Internet at any device ranging from Computers, Laptops, Smartphones, and Tablets, etc. from anywhere in the house without managing countless cable bundles.

Today, we will discuss why we should secure wireless networks that we use at home and office. Nowadays the application of a Wifi connection is not just limited to browsing the internet using any device. Similarly, we can attach a lot of other devices as per our convenience. We can take printouts of any file sitting in a different room or floor of the same house.

Wireless networks surely make our life easy but we need to ensure security as well while using wifi. Because if we are not aware of this security, then there are consequences of facing many difficulties. For example, we have to put a strong and healthy password for our internet connections. Otherwise, neighbors will use the internet connection, consuming our bandwidth at the same time which will make our internet connection slow. The worst part is, cybercriminals can use the internet connection to download or upload illegal files leaving us prone to legal action.

5 Ways to Maximize Security in Wireless Network at Home

The Internet router is one of the most important devices along with others at our home. It is the gateway to our Internet access, prone to exploits by cybercriminals who can sneak into our devices easily and get access to our system. It happens quite often. Once we install a router at our home, we find peace all around our home as the internet gets us the whole world.

There are ways to maximize security in a wireless network. They are:

1. Change the Name of your Default Home Network

To have a  secured home network, the first thing that should be maintained is to change the name of the Wi-Fi network that is basically known as the SSID. The default name for Wi-Fi makes it harder for attackers to know what type of router you have. This is suggested by advisors not to call home network something with anyone. Because it becomes more obvious whose Wi-Fi it is.

2. Set Up a Strong and Unique

A good wireless password should be strong enough consisting of at least 20 characters long and include numbers, capital letters, small letters, and various symbols.

3. Turn off the Wireless Home Network when you’re not at Home

In order to secure the network, it is strongly recommended to turn off the Wi-Fi, in case of extended periods of non-use. This should be done with all our devices that are using Ethernet cables or when we are not at home. By doing this, we are closing possible opportunities that malicious hackers might attempt to get access to it. Here are a few advantages of turning off the wireless network:

  • Security reasons – Turning off the network devices, it minimizes the chances of becoming a target for hackers.
  • Surge protection – When the power of our network devices is off, the possibility of being damaged by electric power surges also lowers.
  •  Noise reduction – Though the modern home networks are much quieter than before, disabling your wireless home network can add calmness to your home further.

4. Where is the Router Located at Home?

This is usually out of our head, that placing the router also has an effect on security. The router should be placed in the middle of the house. Due to this, the connection will equally be distributed to every room. We will not expect our connection to get outside of the house which is quite obvious. So, it should not be placed somewhere near the windows or any doors close to outside.

5. Turn off the DHCP Functionality on the Router

To enhance the wireless network security, we should turn off the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol that points us to the server in our router. It is what addresses are assigned to each device on a particular network which ensures whose networks it belongs to. We should make use of a static address and enter your network settings. This means that no one should enter into their device and assign it an IP address that is suitable to their router.

Final Thought

What is security in wireless networks is quite one of the important questions that arise among customers, which should not be looked away at any cost. If this matter is maintained with proper maintenance, then there is a 0% chance of getting hacked or face any kind of further problems. No one should ever be careless in this case.
